Compare the scope before choosing
| Question | East Africa Tourist Visa | Kenya standard eTA |
|---|---|---|
| Geographical scope | The Uganda–Rwanda–Kenya tourism arrangement. | Entry into Kenya; not permission for Uganda or Rwanda. |
| Entry planning | Issuing country must match first entry. | Check Kenya’s rules and exemptions for your passport. |
| Regional availability | Check the issuing country’s current route. | A separate East African Tourist eTA is listed as coming soon. |
| Price comparison | Regional government fee is published separately from assistance. | Check the exact current eTA category and official checkout. |
If you land in Nairobi or Mombasa first
Begin with the official Kenya eligibility and application guidance. Establish the permission or exemption that applies to your passport and travel purpose. Then check what Uganda and Rwanda require for the onward visits.
Do not purchase something labelled a Kenya-issued regional tourist product just because the trip covers three countries. Kenya’s own eligibility page currently shows that regional category as coming soon.
If you enter Uganda or Rwanda before Kenya
Review the regional route with the first-entry authority. For the Kenya leg, confirm the current treatment of the document you will actually hold. Do not infer an exemption for your passport or document from a general comparison page.
Save the official guidance relevant to your travel dates and recheck it close to departure. An authority’s current product list is more useful than an old article that still describes a previous visa system.
Avoid these three planning mistakes
- Buying a Kenya-only permission and assuming it also covers Uganda or Rwanda.
- Selecting a regional issuing country that differs from your first arrival.
- Assuming “multiple entry” permits an outside-country stop and return under the same regional visa.
Use the itinerary checker for preparation, then confirm permission and exemptions with the relevant authority.
Questions & answers
Does a Kenya eTA cover Uganda and Rwanda?
A Kenya entry authorisation is not permission to enter Uganda or Rwanda. Check those countries’ requirements separately or confirm a suitable regional route.
