Keep these three dates separate
| Date or period | What to check | Planning mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Application processing | When the authority can decide the submitted case. | Counting a processing estimate as permission to travel. |
| Permission validity | The start and end dates and conditions on the issued document. | Assuming every regional document starts at the first arrival. |
| Permitted stay and travel | The conditions applied by immigration to your entries. | Treating each border crossing as a new automatic 90-day stay. |
Uganda’s published issue-date wording matters
The Uganda regional-visa page gives a 90-day description and also states validity as three months from the date of issue. Those phrases should not be converted into a made-up universal date calculation. Calendar months and a fixed number of days are different ways of describing time.
Check the document you actually receive. If an approval letter, sticker or portal message appears to show conflicting dates, ask the issuer to clarify them before travel. Keep that answer with the permission. Our website does not recalculate or extend immigration dates.
Do not borrow an extension rule from another visa
Uganda’s regional page says the permission is not renewable after expiry, and its Washington embassy says an East Africa Tourist Visa cannot be extended. A destination’s general national-visa extension information does not establish that the regional category can be extended.
If plans change, contact immigration while the current permission is still valid. Do not wait for expiry or assume that paying a private assistance provider creates an extension right.
Expiry and an outside-country stop are separate questions
A document can still show an unexpired date while the planned itinerary raises a separate entry question. Tanzania and Zanzibar are outside the regional arrangement. Official wording about leaving and returning is not fully consistent across the material we reviewed, so obtain issuer-specific confirmation for a real outside-stop itinerary.
Check the dedicated itinerary guide for the conflicting wording and examples. Do not equate “multiple entry” with an unconditional right to return from any country.
Before choosing when to apply
- Write down the first entry, last regional exit and any stop outside the three countries.
- Check current submission timing with the issuing authority.
- Compare the issued validity dates with the whole itinerary.
- Ask the issuer about any mismatch before booking around an assumed extension.
Questions & answers
Does the East Africa Tourist Visa start on arrival or issue?
Do not assume a universal arrival-date rule. Uganda’s regional page describes three months from issue; confirm the dates and conditions on your actual document with its issuing authority before relying on a start date.
Uganda Immigration ↗Can I extend an East Africa Tourist Visa?
Uganda’s regional guidance says it is not renewable on expiry, and its embassy states the regional visa cannot be extended. Do not apply a national-visa extension rule to the regional category. Ask immigration about your circumstances before expiry.
