Kigali to Uganda Gorilla Trekking: Plan the Visa for Your Return

THE SHORT ANSWER

For a Kigali–Uganda–Kigali holiday, count two entries into Rwanda and one into Uganda. A regional tourist visa may fit this tourism itinerary, subject to your passport and the actual permissions issued. If you obtain the regional visa before travel and first enter in Kigali, use the Rwanda-first route. A gorilla booking does not replace an entry permission.

Start with the return flight, not just the trek

A traveller may describe the holiday as a Uganda safari while holding a return ticket to Kigali. That description hides an important part of the paperwork: the journey begins in Rwanda, enters Uganda, then returns to Rwanda for the flight home. Write down those movements before choosing an application route.

Use the worked example below as a planning exercise. It is an invented itinerary, not a border clearance, tour recommendation or promise about road conditions. Replace every stop and date with your actual booking. Ask your operator which border post and transfer arrangements it intends to use.

Check the whole loop before selecting a visa

Rwanda's regional guidance ties an advance application to the country of first entry and describes repeat travel within the participating countries. That makes the Rwanda-first regional route a relevant option to check for this loop. It does not establish that every traveller must buy it: nationality-based exemptions and other permissions can change the answer.

A Rwanda national permission and the regional tourist visa are different products. Do not carry a single-entry document and assume that a second Rwanda entry is covered because the return is only a few days later. Have the issuing authority clarify the permissions for both legs if you are comparing national options. The application package on this site is for the regional route; it is not a bundle of every national visa.

Build one trip pack with clearly separated records

A useful pack lets a reviewer follow the journey without guessing where you sleep on the transfer days. If the operator changes a lodge, date or country order, update your working itinerary and ask whether the application or issued permission also needs attention. Avoid submitting two contradictory versions without an explanation.

Keep health, park participation and immigration checks separate. This article does not decide vaccination requirements, fitness to trek, minimum park ages or permit availability. Check those with the responsible authority and operator for the actual travel dates.

  • Keep the international arrival and departure bookings together so the Kigali return is easy to see.
  • Ask the operator for a dated itinerary showing the country of each overnight stay and the planned cross-border transfers.
  • Keep the trek reservation or permit confirmation separately from entry permissions; each document answers a different question.
  • Check the name and travel document used for every reservation against the application.
  • Prepare a separate applicant record for each person travelling, even if one operator invoice covers everyone.

Three changes that deserve another route check

Avoid adding a third country just to make the itinerary look more regional. Describe the real holiday. If the relevant authority needs clarification about a two-country itinerary, obtain that clarification rather than creating a booking you do not intend to use.

Turn the itinerary into an application

Once the first arrival, return leg and permissions are clear, gather the personal and passport information for the traveller whose application you are completing. Our form lets you select Rwanda first, describe the trip and upload the requested supporting records. Review the form against the same version of the itinerary that your operator holds.

Saving an application gives you an EAV reference. Payment, onward immigration submission and the authority's decision are separate stages. Keep the reference confidential and use Track visa for the recorded progress. If you already submitted here and your route has changed, contact support with that reference before starting another application.

Questions & answers

Do I choose Uganda first because the gorilla trek is in Uganda?

Use the actual first immigration entry. In the Kigali–Uganda–Kigali example it is Rwanda, even though the main activity is in Uganda. Check any earlier connection where you may enter another country.

Does the visa include a gorilla permit?

No. Our application package does not include park permits, tours, transport or accommodation. Keep the trek arrangements and entry permissions as separate booking tasks.

Can one tour booking cover everybody's visa application?

A shared itinerary can help explain the trip, but each applicant still needs their own accurate personal details, passport information and supporting records. Check the family preparation article before organising several applications.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Put your preparation into the application.

Our regional application package is US$199 per applicant, government fee included. Enter your trip and passport details, upload the requested documents and review your application.
