Nairobi Transit Before Uganda or Rwanda: Which Country Is First Entry?

Read the connection as an immigration question

A ticket might show London–Nairobi–Entebbe, but the list of airports alone does not describe where you pass immigration. The important practical question is whether you remain in transit or enter Kenya before continuing. Start with the actual baggage handling, tickets, terminals and overnight arrangements.

Kenya's current preparation guidance lists an airport-transit exemption for passengers who remain within the airport precincts. That does not tell us that your particular booking qualifies. Ask the operating carrier how the connection will be handled, then clarify any entry-permission uncertainty with the responsible authority. A travel agent's label 'connection' is not enough by itself.

Three scenarios to compare with your booking

These are decision examples, not a ruling on terminals, airlines or maximum transit hours. We have not verified your ticket or an airside hotel arrangement. Do not turn an assumption about one airline into a rule for every Nairobi connection.

Ask the carrier specific questions

Save the answer with the booking details and date. If the airline changes a flight or issues separate tickets, recheck the transfer rather than relying on an earlier answer about a different itinerary. Ask about the exact passenger documents and route where boarding requirements are uncertain.

• Are all flights on the same protected booking, and does that change the transfer process?
• Will the baggage be checked to the final destination, or must it be collected in Nairobi?
• Can the full transfer be completed without clearing immigration?
• Does the planned hotel or terminal transfer require entry into Kenya?
• What happens if a delay forces an overnight stay or a missed connection?

If Kenya becomes your first entry, pause the regional purchase

Kenya's current eligibility screen labels the East African Tourist eTA as coming soon. We therefore do not present a Kenya-issued regional checkout as available. An actual Kenya-first entry needs its own permission or exemption check and a clear plan for onward Uganda and Rwanda entries.

There is also a documented implementation warning: a Polish embassy notice dated 21 November 2025 reports problems entering Uganda with paper regional documents issued through Kenya, and recommends separate entry arrangements in that situation. It describes a specific reported problem, not a universal ruling about every regional document or a new ban. It is another reason to clarify a Kenya-first plan before paying.

If you remain in transit, describe the onward arrival accurately

After the transit arrangement is confirmed, identify the first country where you will actually enter the participating area. A genuine airport-only Nairobi connection followed by immigration entry in Kigali may point to the Rwanda-first route; an Entebbe arrival may point to Uganda first. Your passport and the applicable entry rules still need checking.

Show the full ticket sequence in your travel evidence, including Nairobi. Do not hide a connection to make the route look simpler. Add a factual note about the confirmed transfer if it helps explain why the selected first-entry country differs from the first regional airport printed on the ticket.

Apply once the connection and route agree

Use the route checker with the confirmed travel plan, then complete the application for the actual first-entry route. If you already applied and a schedule change creates a Kenya entry, contact support with the existing reference before creating another record or payment.

A visa application service cannot decide the carrier's transfer procedure or promise boarding. Resolving that question first helps avoid preparing an otherwise consistent application for the wrong arrival plan.
